Founded in 2010 vima medical markets healthcare applications with our development and manufacturing partner Rieker, Inc. - a market leader in inclinometers and accelerometers with a history of more than 75 years of continuous operation.

The company’s first commercial offering focuses on the prevention of pneumonia in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality of mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. VAP results in increased ICU days, prolonged use of mechanical ventilation, longer hospital stay and costs > $40,000 per patient treated (Estimate the cost of VAP).

The prevention of VAP in clinical practice focuses on the implementation of bundled of interventions such as: Elevation of the Head of the Bed (>30°), Daily "Sedation Vacations" and Assessment of Readiness to Extubate, Peptic Ulcer Disease Prophylaxis, Deep Venous Thrombosis Prophylaxis and Daily Oral Care with Chlorhexidine. While the potential benefits of ventilator bundles are well recognized, integration into everyday practice has been inconsistent. One specifically challenging area is head of bed elevation.

The first product from vima medical creates a unique, simple, convenient device to improve compliance with elevation of the head of bed. The HOBAlert monitors Head of Bed (HOB) elevation, alert medical staff when the angle falls below a pre-defined limit and record the data as documentation for compliance purposes.
